Welcome to OpenCulture!
Welcome to the OpenCulture blog. My name is Nick. I’m Chief Executive of the Collections Trust and I am also responsible (with Jane Finnis from Culture24) for conceiving, developing and generally getting OpenCulture off the ground.
So what is OpenCulture? The answer is that it really depends on how you look at it. At the simplest level, it’s the principle that cultural organisations (museums, archives, libraries) have a responsibility to make good, sensible use of technology to reach the widest possible audience and engage them in new, interesting, fun and (hopefully) creative ways.
In another sense, OpenCulture is a network - a group of individuals and organisations which spans museums, archives, libraries, public service broadcasters, Government agencies and many others who have an interest in making culture more, well, open.
It’s also an initiative, or a series of pieces of work which over the next 3 years will advance the use of technology to open up cultural information across the UK and internationally. Because these collections, the astonishingly rich collections of digital pictures and words and multimedia should be available for everyone, wherever they are.
Over the next couple of years, Jane Finnis and I (and possibly some other special guests) will be using this blog to keep track of OpenCulture as it develops. We hope you’ll join us, share the highs and lows, and get involved in this vital piece of work.
